Addressed to Alphonse Daudet, and dated 'Croisset, Sept. 3 (1879)', this letter was probably written when Flaubert was working at his last, incomplete, masterpiece: Bouvard et Pècuchet. In June 1879, Flaubert was in Paris to work at the Bibliothèque Nationale for Bouvard's religious chapter (and yet he already dreamed of writing a work on the battle of Thermopolis); only in September, in the years in which this letter was written, he started working at his novel again. The letter was partially published in Correspondence de Flaubert, ed. L. Conard, voI. 8, pp. 179-180 (Paris, 1923).
