Description
Current Lot Arthur Miller (1915-2005) Remarkable set of documents written by the foremost American playwright comprising six typed letters signed by Arthur Miller and some autograph writings as well. The letters are addressed to the great director and scholar Gerardo Guerrieri (1920-1984), whose Italian translations of Miller's The Misfits (1961) and After the Fall (1964) have been published by Einaudi. Some autograph notes of the replies from Guerrieri or his wife, Anne d'Arbeloff Guerrieri, accompany these letters, which date back to the years between 1959 and 1982, and mainly relate to play subjects, Guerrieri's translations of Miller's screenplays, text clarifications, on-stage or radio performances: '"The man Who had Ali the Luck" is a play which I haven 't the inclination to work on and, in its present shape, I would just assume it remains in the dark as far as publication is concerned' (May 7, 1959). 'I'm writing this to clear only misconceptions, firstly; and secondly, to present you with one or two ambiguities! (our comedy never ends, does it?) The closing of the play is a scandal, the last act of a producer of enormous incompetence who simply had play...' (December 6, '80 Saturday). Other letters, such as the one dated 13 February 1982, relate to business meetings or subjects inherent to Miller's activity, such as press releases or interviews. Included in this lot is a series of photocopies of biographic texts from Gerardo Guerrieri's repertoire and abstracts of publications discussing his work. As a whole, this collection of documents is extremely precious considering Miller's fortune in Italy and the role played by Guerrieri, a great protagonist behind the scenes of the Italian theatre after World War II.
