Maestro Andrea Monteleone Palermo', music director at the Teatro Carolino, Palermo, where also Donizetti had collaborated few years earlier as 'Maestro di Cappella, direttore della musica e compositore delle opere'. The two pages, 8vo, are kept in an album with black hardcover bearing gilt decoration and print: 'Autografo di Donizetti, 1829'. This letter, which was written by Donizetti in the days preceding the première of Il Paria at the Teatro San Carlo (12 January 1829), is extremely interesting in that it is a historical document offering an insight into the 'theatrical activities' at that time, especially with regard to the selection of the artists or 'casting', using today's vocabulary:'lo debbo, con infinito rincrescimento dirti che non è possibile il servirti per la Sig.ra Pavacchi, atteso che Barbja ed io siamo a diavolo e croce, eppoi cerca di licenziare qualche d'una di quella che hà [...] ti rinnovo la raccomandazione di Ambrosini, egli non ha cantato se non che alla Fenice per imprudenza, ossia per mania di calcar le scene, ignaro dello scredito di quel teatro (poiché è Romano). Tuttavia, Lablache canterà a S. Carlino, e ora è al S. Carlone. Io te lo affidavo, di bella figura che stà bene in scena, che desidera poca paga, vedi bene se S. E, Serradifalco, lo rispetta ci trova vantaggi, alfine, Sercesi che avea fatto? E questo non è per acuto a quello inferiore, eppoi io lo affiderei, lo farei studiare per questo poco tempo...'.
