Description
Current Lot Archivio Gino Severini (1883-1966) Extraordinary set of autograph papers by one of the major exponents of Futurism. The ensemble has been divided in three thematic sections. A) Original 12-page work, 4to (recto only), typed yet showing with many autograph corrections made with pen and black ink. The sheets have been numbered by the author, who also gave a title to this work : Concetti di forma e di spazio nello pittura moderna. Incipit: 'Dice Strawinski nello sua auto-biografia che l'uomo, a causo dell'imperfezione della natura, è destinato o subire lo svolgersi del tempo, delle sue categorie del passato e dell'awenire, senza mai poter rendere reale etc... ' B) Original typed writing of L'artista e l'esistenzialismo. Conferenza tenuta alla 'Cosa dello Cultura' di Milano il 7 maggio 1946 (the title is autograph, and replaces the previously typed one: 'L'artista -lo Verità - Lo Responsabilità (L'esistenzialismo)'. 25 sheets, 4 to (recto only) densely written, corrected and shoeing autograph integrations or changes. For both the two writings, see G. Severini, Tutta la vita di un pittore, Milano, Garzanti, 1946 (or Feltrinelli edition, 1983). C) Relevant set of 27 signed autograph letters (mainly written in French on paper, 4to) addressed, amongst others, to the philologist and historian Neville Rogers, and the writer and journalist Bernard Wall. These letters date between 1920 and 1962; some of them are provided with the original envelope. Above all, these letters offer interesting insights into the artistic and cultural life of Severini's day and provide information on exhibitions, artistic projects, critics and markets at that time. Particularly significant is the letter dated 'Langrune s/mer 7 juillet 1920' addressed to the writer and art critique who promoted Dada, Paul Dermée : 'Je te priverais ce pendant de bien vouloir attendre à la rentrée pour l'execution des planches, car, comme tu sais, je dois mener de front les soins relatifs à un traitement sérieux et le travail indispensable pour la vie matérielle [...] et c'est au prix de beaucoup d'effort que j'arrive à concilier ces deux choses opposées'. Other letters make reference to staging projects, ballets and theatrical performances whilst many are the letters sent to Rogers with regard to lectures, exhibitions (such as the display of Italian painting held at the Tate Gallery in 1950), public meetings or the artistic techniques that Severini was experimenting (such as the one in which he excelled, mosaics). Reference is also made to Shelley, as Rogers curated an important edition of the works by this poet, and Luca Signorelli, as well as to art and literature, books and catalogues, articles and magazines, travels and sojourns in Paris and London. Particularly worthy of mention is the letter dated Meudon, 5 September 1946, which was written from the house that Jacques Maritain had put at his disposal in Rome, where Severini wrote L'artista e l'esistenzialismo dedicated to Picasso's work (particularly Guernica). And lastly, included in this section is a small photographic portrait of the artist with dedication o verso. For further information about this series of documents, see G. Severini, Tutto la vita di un pittore, cit. Splendid collection of papers bearing witness to the whole life and work of this artist. Starting Price
