Description
Current Lot Tomaso Machiavelli (16th century). Beautiful and interesting autograph letter signed by the diplomat, "Firenze, 7bre 1563", addressed to Margherita d'Austria (1522 - 1586) (for whom Tomaso worked), natural daughter of Carlo V, duchess of Parma and Piacenza and Governor of the Netherlands. In the letter, Machiavelli informs her of the raids of the Ottoman naval commander, Dragut, known as the Avenging Sword of Islam. The letter, of particular historical worth, provides a vivid description of the Saracen incursions on the Italian coasts during the 16th century. Two pages in-4, wax seal, autograph address. In a wooden frame.
