Holed at the top as made for suspension, this beauty is one of the most sought-after of early political badges. It is of course double-sided, with the log cabin & cider barrel, and campaign slogans on the reverse side.Only a handful are known, a significant number of which suffer from condition problems. Notably, like the smaller sulfide pins, there is a tendency for the black background to flake, and for the white pigment to crumble, probably due to moisture. The present example is near-perfect in that regard, one of the finest we have seen, and also is free of the typical surface scratches and wear on the glass. The only defect is what appears to be a surface flake on the underside of the glass in the field near the edge around 8:00. It is, of course, largely mitigated by the black background, and noticeable only on careful inspection but it must be noted for accuracy.The pewter frame had suffered from uneven surface discoloration that resisted all attempts at cleaning, so the consignor engaged a professional conservator to refinish it. As the photos show, this was quite successful.
