The R-4s were originally delivered to the subway in 1932-33. They were built by American Car and Foundry, and a total of 500 were built. Sign 431 measures 16.5" x 10".  It is made of steel coated in enamel (porcelain??) with white numbers on greenish/black background.   It's in great shape for it's age! There is a small rust spot around one of the screw mounting holes. Please see the photo.    A great piece of NY history you can own.    Also makes a great gift!
