Description
You are bidding on an antique BMT (Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit) New York Subway "Q" Car side sign #1620 C. The Q Cars were built by Jewett Car Company in 1908 for the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company. There were 30 3-car triplex units. These had a power car on each end sandwiching a trailer car. There were an additional 12 2-car units built. They were commonly called the "gate" cars because there were gated platforms on each end instead of doors. All of the cars were rebuilt in 1938 for service dedicated to the 1939 World's Fair, and reassigned to serve on the IRT's Flushing Line. After the World's Fair, they ran on the 3rd Avenue Elevated, and finished out their service lives on the Myrtle Avenue Elevated. They were retired when the Myrtle Line was closed in October of 1969. They were the last wooden rapid transit cars in regular, passenger service anywhere in the world. Sign 1620 C measures 22.5" x 8". It is made of wood, painted green with gold painted numbers outlined in black. Some of the paint has chipped away, and there are a couple of splits in the wood. Overall, it is in very good condition for its age. A great piece of NY history you can own. Also makes a great gift! Personal checks or money orders accepted. We DO NOT accept PayPal. Item shipped for actual cost (box will weigh approx. 5 pounds) from north Carolina, 27546. Thanks & Good Luck!
