Description
A rare artifact and American treasure has been found ladies & gentleman, George Woolf's (the greatest horse racing jockey of all-time) original racing saddle, pair of riding boots & original photo from 1928. These pieces are estimated to be from 1928-1945, a family heirloom that has been passed down for 5 generations to Mike Woolf, is now available to the public.  It is unknown what years he used the saddle from, but I was told it was used through out his career and passed down to his family, were estimating between 1932-1945.  All are in great condition considering there 60-80 years old, the riding boots have "GW" written inside on both of them.  The last pair (the only other pair known that sold) of George Woolf boots sold in 2003 for $6,500 and they didn't have his initials inside, making these even more rare (could be the only ones ever found with initials).  The photo is 80 years old and is dated 15-28 Ted Healy & G. Woolf Tijuana, on the back it says Great Uncle George Woolf 1928.  It has a rip, some creases and some discoloration, more pictures are available upon request.  These pieces should probably be in the United States Racing Hall of Fame or the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame due to his great achievements but are available to one lucky collector or investor.             Here is a little information about the only other saddle that sold July 22, 2003.  The saddle used by jockey George Woolf to ride Seabiscuit over 50 years ago was bought 2 1/2 hours after it failed to meet the reserve price in the auction.  The buyer who was from Virginia requested anonymity said James M. Goodman, who brought the racing memorabilia to the attention of the I.M Chait Gallery in Beverly Hills, California.  The saddle was the main attraction of the 372 lots on the auction block 7/22/03.  Bidding on the saddle ended at $125,000 after 4-1/2 hours, which was lower than the estimate of $150,000-$250,000 that the gallery had put on it.  It was later sold for a unknown price that was rumored to went for over $150,000.  George Woolf's riding boots worn through out his career sold for $7,638 (and didn't have his initials inside like ours do), his whip sold for $5,250.    Woolf's silks; includes cap and shirt; race worn; black and white; $1,998.  Vintage photo; Woolf on Seabiscuit during the opening day at Aqua Caliente; 16 inches by 19 3/4 inches; $3,525.  Woolf's riding crop; $6,169.  The auction items were on display for many years at the Derby, a suburban Los Angeles restaurant by Santa Anita that was owned by George Woolf.               George Monroe Woolf (May 31 1910 - January 4, 1946) was a Canadian born thoroughbred race horse jockey and the name of the annual jockey's award given out by the United States Jockey's Guild.  Born in Cardston, Alberta.  His mother had been a trick rider in a circus, his father rode in rodeos.  George Woolf was taught to ride horses as a kid and as a teenager he rode in horse races and also competed in rodeo events in Montana and Alberta.  Woolf began racing thoroughbreds profesionally in British Columbia, Vancouver around 1928 before heading to Mexico, Tijuana and then to Arcadia, California where he made his home later on.  Santa Anita Park being his home, George Woolf became the premier jockey of his era.  He was a diabetic and had to regulate his weight.  His racing success only allowed him to accept a few mounts a week that kept him the best condition physically possible.  Even though he had a relatively short career and was limited in his number of races, Woolf won 97 major stakes races in the U.S. including the American Derby, the Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes, and the Belmont Futurity Stakes three years consecutively.  He made history in 1935 when he rode Azucar in the first $100,000 horse race to victory, the Santa Anita Handicap,  Woolf finished second twice at the Kentucky Derby and won the Preakness Stakes 1936.  Also remembered for his great tactical performance in the 1938 match vs. War Admiral were he rode Seabiscuit to victory in the Pimlico Special.  In the fourth race at Santa Anita Parck January 3, 1946 Woolf fell from his horse as he rounded the turn, suffered a concussion and was taken to the hospital were he died the following day.  Its generally believed his diabetic condition may have been the cause suffering from a dizzy spell or fainting.  A shocking death at the age of 35, one of the country's best jockeys and a fan favorite lead to the creation of the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.  Through out his career (1928-1946) Woolf had 3,784 mounts, 721 wins (19.1%), 589 seconds and 468 third place finishes.  After the creation, Woolf was inducted in the national Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1955and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1956 and also voted to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 1976.  A bronze statue was made in the honor of George Woolf in the European style paddock at Santa Anita Park, he is in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.    George Woolf known as the "Iceman" because of his flawless timing and steely nerves is considered by many to be the greatest jockey who has ever lived.  He rode on recognized tracks for only 13 years, often accepting less than 300 mounts a year, Woolf won 97 major U.S. stakes races at a time when there were far fewer added money events than there is today.  Seabiscuit a Universal film opened on July 25, 2003 with jockey Gary Stevens playing George Woolf, Stevens had won the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 1996.-I will only ship to U.S.A. buyers unless otherwise negotiated.    Payment due with in 48 hours.      Serious buyers only.-Shipping:  Local pickup is recommended because insurance will only cover up to 50k. -UPS Shipping is $650 and only available in the United States.  International buyers:  mandatory local pickup only unless otherwise negotiated..-Any other questions or requests don't hesitate to ask.
