Description
I am proud to bring to you this amazing large pot.Created by Iris Nampeyo;also known as Iris Youvella Nampeyo, after marrying her husband Wallace Youvella. This is one beautiful Contemporary Corn Yellow polished  pot.  It is signed Iris Nampeyo with her corn Hallmark and census number of the Hopi Tribe. This large vessel measures 6 inches tall and 10 inches wide. The amazing Corn pattern is carved on the top is just incredible. The intricate polish all around the vessel is just mesmerizing. I do not think pictures could ever show the beauty of this amazing pot. This pot is in new condition ,for an old pot it is excellent. The polish is outstanding and the carving is Incredible. This is from my private collection, and I hate to sell it. My loss is your reward ,and a great collectors piece. This is on of her earlier pieces before signing Iris Youvella Nampeyo. Rennard Strickland in his 1986 article illustrated her appliqueed buffware jar on which he commented ,"...[Iris] Nampeyo has perfected the sculptural approach to ceramics first introduced by Elizabeth White and later developed by her nephew , Al Colton [Qoyawayma].As important to the vessel`s design as its meticulously polished surface is the delicately modeled applique cornstalk."(Strickland 1986:288)   Iris Youvella Nampeyo is from the Corn Clan, active since 1960- present.Iris is know for making appliqueed buffware jars, black and red on yellow jars, and miniatures.Today she is still making the yellow corn jars.Iris was born in 1944, and is the Granddaughter of Nampeyo:daughter of Fannie Polacca Nampeyo.  Her sisters are Leah Garcia Nampeyo,Tonita Hamilton Nampeyo, and Elva Tewanguna Nampeyo. Her brothers are Harold Polaca Nampeyo,Elsworth Pollacca and the late Tom Pollaca. Her pieces are collected in the Herd Museum,The Museum of Indian arts in Santa Fe and many more.  Iris fires all her pots traditionally and not in a Kiln. The pots are all hand coiled and made traditionally.
