This card is captioned "No. 1. WHERE CUSTER FELL JUNE 25, 1876, TAKEN JUNE 1977." Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931) is one of the most collected "Old West" photographers. As a young man, he apprenticed under the renowned Yellowstone Park photographer F. Jay Haynes. In 1878 he was appointed as civilian post photographer at Fort Keogh, Montana Territory, near Miles City. He stayed in eastern Montana for almost all the remainder of his life, gleaning his technique of capturing authentic western action on photographs. Huffman set a high standard for western photographers with his studies of ranching scenes, cattle drives, buffalo hunts, wild horse roundups, Indian portraits and other themes of western life. His images can be found on postcards, stereoviews, colliotypes and various formats of photography. There are fewer than 50 known printed Huffman postcards that were published during his lifetime, including the "1926" series of 15 cards, of which this is one. Postally unused; circa 1926.
