Description
celtan Store Danish Napoleonic Hussar Saber Model 1808 Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Light Cavalry Sabre “A la Hongroise” Provenance: DenmarkDate: Late 18th - Early 19th C. Condition: FairDetails:Grip seems to be  missing one of its wire strands, others remain. Leather still present.  Obvious blade pitting and rust. No scabbard. Engraved on its cross guard the letters 4E HE.HX:The model 1808 Hussar saber was delivered from Frederiksverk, as a supplement to Hussar sabers since 1776. It was eventually given its official registration in 1808. The M/1808 swords were made in three different versions,  with blades varying in curvature and shape of their tips.Military HX: Danish Hussars in blue uniform surrounding Carl Prince of Hessen at the head of a Danish-Norwegian Army.  Battle at Kvistrum Bridge in Sweden, 1788 (Russo-Swedish War of 1788-1790).In Denmark, HE stands for Hussar Regimentet. And 4E stands for 4th Eskvadron (Squadron). Consequently, the engraved guard's 4E HE means 4th Squadron of Hussars (Hussaret): 4th Eskvadron Hussarregimentet. In fact, the HR were the _only_ Danish Hussar regiment during the Napoleonic Wars. The Danish Hussars held a distinguished Napoleonic Wars service record, as Denmark was an ally of Bonaparte and the French Armee. The Husseret showed their mettle, from the British Siege of Copenhagen to the Battle of Sehested in 1813. The HR even met Russian and Prussian Hussars blade to blade, emerging victorious from their direct encounter at Rosengarten.. The History of the Danish Hussar Guards http://www.geocities.com/armdury/ghrhistory.htm Gardehusarregimentet  "Founded in 1614, the  Guard Hussar Regiment is the oldest regiment of hussars in the world. It is a mixed armour/infantry unit with seven battalions. In addition to its operational role, the Guard Hussar Regiment is one of two regiments in the Danish Army (along with the Den Kongelige Livgarde) to be classed as 'Guards'; in this case, the Guard Hussars perform the same role as the Household Cavalry do in the British Army. In mounted parade uniform the Gardehusarregimentet are the only hussars to still wear the slung and braided pelise which was formerly characteristic of this class of cavalry."Today, they still ride their Horses, but also ultramodern Leopard 1A5 tanks! Estimated Value: The estimated value for similar types of swords from the same period, as quoted in 2006 by Harvey J. S. Withers in his book "World Swords 1400-1945. An illustrated price guide for Collectors", ranges from $800.00  to $3,500.00  . Please refer to the chapter on "Cavalry Swords" p.80-116. This was two years ago, and the quoted values do not take into consideration any appreciation since, nor the fact that this sabre is an extremely rare piece, unlike the more common ones shown in those pages. My Notes:This blade is an extremely rare Historic find, more suited to a museum than to a private collection, on account of is rarity.  Specially when you consider that the small numbers involved, since the Danish had only one Hussar unit, makes finding their swords quite rare. Specially with the original markings. The M1808 sabers were assigned in 1816 to Danish Lancer Units, and their Hussar markings erased or lined out, to be marked anew for the Lancers.  This is a very, very rare example that somehow, perhaps from battlefield loss, managed to survive and reach us, its original Napoleonic markings intact and undefaced,  rigours of time aside. As a sword collector,  I know this would make for both a solid investment, and a splendid Christmas gift to anyone interested in the Napoleonic Wars, Scandinavian History, or the gallant and flamboyant Military History of the fabled Corps des Hussards.  Please note that, due to its rare nature, I have not aggressively cleaned the sword . My care has mostly been limited to mere lubrication and removal of loose debris. The grip's leather was treated with Pecard's Antique Oil, and the blade waxed. The previous owner tried to replace some grip wiring that he believed was missing.  His new additions, I simply removed. Consequently,  you will notice some of the broken grip wire ends coming out from between the back-strap and the grip. It's possible that no original grip wire was lost at all, and that the twisted wire is exactly as should be. I am leery of going beyond what I have done so far, I'm painfully aware of the limits of my knowledge, and I 'm afraid incorrect care may instead damage this historical relic.  This sabre could certainly benefit from a professionally done cleaning and polish.References:"World Swords 1400-1945. Bear in mind that same were occasionally incorrect, and perhaps even misleading. I inspect items and describe them as carefully as I can, but I will miss things. There are people who have been altering and faking items for 30-40 years and sometimes alterations are very difficult to determine. Within your inspection period you must satisfy yourself as to originality. Acceptance of the item after the inspection period will hold me from any future claims or liability in case the item is subsequently determined to be altered or faked. Please treat the inspection period seriously, it is your chance to inspect or have a professional inspect an item, and determine originality and condition. I'll try to answer all questions, and will add to the item’s description any extra info provided by more knowledgeable Ebay members. Good luck in your bidding!M PHOTOS:
