Description
Make sure to BOOKMARK OUR EBAY STORE and check out OUR NEWLY LISTED ITEMS   Ok MAD fans, here is a truly historic and important piece. This is the original art for the first page of the legendary "Draft Dodger" feature from MAD Magazine #37, published in January of 1958 by E.C. This was a short 2-page feature that introduced a brand new board game, with the thought in mind of creating more realistic games. So the point of this game is... you guessed it, to become a full-fledged Draft Dodger! Anyway, readers who finished the game were advised that to get their Draft Dodger Membership Card, they should write to J. Edgar Hoover (who was of course at the time the director of a little government organization known as the FBI). Although Bill Gaines, Al Feldstein (Editor of MAD), and the other MAD staff did not think anyone would actually write to Hoover and request a Draft Dodger card, it turned out that many MAD readers did just that! Suffice to say that Hoover was not amused (he did NOT like that his name was used in MAD), and he sent FBI agents to the E.C. offices!!! As Feldstein recounted years later, it was pretty mind-blowing that this was something that the F.B.I. felt was a necessary use of time and manpower, but obviously it is a fascinating look back into a very different era (or was it?....) The piece itself is huge, much larger than any standard art pages, and actually even larger than twice-up art. It is done on thick illustration board which measures approximately 17 1/2" by 24". It is in very good overall condition, and has the official E.C. stamp on the back. Please note that because the piece is so big, the scan you see was made from pasting together 2 scans, which is why there is some unevenness in the picture. That is in the picture only and not on the actual piece itself. And in case you didn't notice, I believe that's Pogo depicted towards the bottom. How cool is that? While EC Comic art (horror, sci-fi, etc.) can often be found for sale, important early MAD art is much tougher to come by, so don't miss out on a rare opportunity. This is an exceptional historic piece of MAD art, that would look great framed, and would be a true key piece in any collection.   Payment to be made within 7 days of auction close.
