Description
PayPal is OK NYC 5 SUBWAY TOKENS 1953-2003 NEW YORK CITY MTA - TRANSIT AUTHORITY Brief description and some basic facts about each of these 5 tokens: FIRST TOKEN slightly smaller than a dime, was issued in July 1953 when the subway fare was increased from a dime to 15 cents. It seem that they were unable to operate the turnstile with either 3 nickels or a dine and a nickel. Thus, the first token came to the rescue. This is the smallest of all the tokens. Both side of this token show NYC in the center with the y being a cut-out. One side states NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT AUTHORITY & the other side states GOOD FOR ONE FARE. Thousands of young men (including yours truly) received one of these first tokens together with their Draft Notices during the Korean War. SECOND TOKEN was issued January 7, 1970. This brass token is similar to the first one except that it is slightly smaller than a quarter. The original cost for this token was 30 cents. THIRD TOKEN (same size as the 2nd token)was issued to commemorate the 75th year anniversary of the NYC Subway system. One side of this token states NYC SUBWAY 1904-1979 People Moving People. This side also shows the classic architectural structure representing a typical NYC subway entrance. The other side shows a train, and states DIAMOND JUBILEE 75TH ANNIVERSARY NYC SUBWAY 1904-1979. This token has a diamond cut-out at the top center. This is by far the most elaborate of the 6 tokens. This token sold for 50 cents. FOURTH TOKEN is the so-called Bullseye Token. This brass token is of the same size and inscriptions as the 4th token. A steel or aluminum 5/16 inch diameter disc is at the center. When this token was retired on 11/12/1995 it sold for $1.25. FIFTH TOKEN is slightly smaller than a nickel and has a cut-out in the shape of a pentagon. This token is called The Five Boroughs. Each side of the pentagon represents a borough. The inscriptions on this token are the same as those of the 5th token. When this final token was replaced by Metro Cards on 4/13/2003 the cost was $1.50. Plus MTA Metrocard curent version the back of it may vary . Tokens are used but they are in a very good condition. Please visit our other auctions for more great deals!
