Many of these boxes were known to be used in the Dakotas and Kansas up until 1910, where they were referred to as 'biscuit boxes'. We bench-build and finish these bread boxes in our Wisconsin shop using native solid hardwood. They are smoothly finished with strong, neat joinery, yet are fitted and shaped to reflect the work and tooling of a country craftsman of the late 18th century. All joints are glued and nailed, with no exposed nail holes. The door frame is lap jointed for strength. The hinges are solid brass. Sized for 2 1/2 loaves. Outside dimensions are 16 3/4" wide x 9 3/4" high x 12 3/4" deep, with a 5" shelf on top. The finish is 3 coats of paint under a top coat of clear, flat lacquer. This produces a finish that is very durable and easy to clean, yet retains the look of an aged antique.
