Description
RARE 400 YEARS OLD PIECE SWEDISH WARSHIP THE RIKSVASA Click to View Image Album Click to View Image Album Click to View Image Album Click to View Image Album Click to View Image Album THIS PIECE USED TO BE PART OF A DECKBEAM TAKEN FROM THE 16TH CENTURY SWEDISH ADMIRALSHIP "RIKSVASA", WHICH WAS LAUNCHED 1599 AND TRAGICALLY CAUGHT FIRE AND SUNK OF DJURHAMN IN THE STOCKHOLM ARCHIPELAGO 1623. THIS SPRING AS I HELPED MY MOTHER MOVE TO A NEW HOME WE CAME ACROSS AN OLD BOX AND FOUND THIS PIECE, THUS SHE RECALLED HOW MY FATHER ONCE CAME IN POSSESSION OF IT, (I WAS TO YOUNG TO REMEMBER). ACCORDING TO HER, MY FATHER WAS GIVEN THIS PIECE IN THE MID SIXTIES FROM A PERSON INVOLVED IN THE EXCAVATION OF THIS ONCE MIGHTY WARSHIP, AS GRATIUDE FOR SERVICES HE AS A CONSULTANT PROVIDED AT THE TIME. AFTER CAREFUL CONSULTATION WITH MY MOTHER WE DECIDED TO OFFER THIS PIECE OF MARITIME HISTORY TO ANY COLLECTOR WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED. I HAVE TRIED TO MAKE THE PICTURES AS DETAILED AS POSSIBLE, AND WILL TRY TO DESCRIBE IT AS ACCURATE I CAN. FIRST I WILL TRANSLATE THE TWO CERTIFICATES SEEN ON THE SIDE AND ON THE BOTTOM OF THE PIECE. I DO NOT KNOW IF THE PLAQUE ON THE SIDE IS SILVER OR NOT, BUT IT READS AS FOLLOWS, "part of a deckbeam from RIKSVASA built 1599 wrecked 1623 salvaged 1963 by the Nahlin brothers" THE SECOND ONE ON THE BOTTOM SEEM TO BE SOME KIND OF CELLULOSE MATERIAL AND READS AS FOLLOWS, "this piece of blackoak comes from RIKSVASA RIKSVASA was launched 1599 at Blasieholmen in Stockholm and was shipwrecked in the Stockholm archipelago 1623. in 1964 the ship has partly been salvaged. The salvage was conducted by the diving brothers Erik and Sven Nahlin in cooperation with the Swedish maritime museum. The position where she was found was shown by Anders Franzen, the man responsible for the salvage of the regalship Vasa." THE SIZE OF THE PIECE IS AS FOLLOWS, WIDH - 12.5cm (5inch) LENGTH - 14.5cm (5 3/4inch) HEIGHT - 4.3cm (1 2/4 inch) IT WEIGHTS APPROX. 400grams. THERE IS A SMALL HOLE DRILLED ON TOP SUITEABLE FOR A PEN, AND A CRACK IN THE WOOD, ORIGIN UNKNOWN, ALSO IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER THERE IS WHAT APPEARS TO BE A SORT OF "STAMP" IN THE WOOD DEPICTING THE SHIP, HER NAME RIKSVASA AND THE YEARS 1599-1623. ON THE BOTTOM THERE IS A SHALLOW RECTANGULAR HOLE THAT SEEM TO BEEN BURNT, AGAIN ORIGIN UNKNOWN. THERE ARE ALSO 4 PROTECTIVE "FEET" COLOUR GREEN. ON THE RIGHT SIDE THERE IS A NUMBER SEQUENCE "01/25" INGRAVED IN THE WOOD. ACCORDING TO MY MOTHER THIS INDICATES THAT ONLY 25 OF THESE WERE TAKEN FROM A DECKBEAM, PREPARED AND PRESENTED TO VARIOUS PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT, ONE BEING MY FATHER.
