Description
Up for auction is a 5 piece lot of 1st Special Service Force or Mountain Division Knives. This is an extremely rare set that will take anyone time and money to put together. I only know of one other although I am certain there are a few others in museums and private collections. The grading range for these knives run from (my opinion) excellent/near mint to mint. All the handles are free of cracks and chips. All knives have good snap with tight blades. *Type 1 - Rounded Staple - is mint with some almost invisible rubs lenthwise on master blade. Rare and seldom seen. **Type 2 - Flat Staple stamped "U.S." - with some very minute age spots. Seen more often on ebay but is a highly desirable knife for any collection. ***Type 3 - Flat Staple with Phillips Screwhead attached - The type 3 with the Phillips screw head still attached to the flat staple is an extremely rare knife and I have only seen one other myself for sale anywhere. This one would be mint except for age dimpling on the master and spey and some discoloration spots, none of which really detract from its appearance or function. It is such a sweet little knife that I call it near mint although, admittedly, it is probably nearer high-excellent. ****The two untyped knives both have the same frame with heavy brass liners as the Type 3 Mountain Division knife. I have heard and read pieces of thoughtful speculation. They may have been made for civilian sales. The one with two cutting blades may have been a prototype planned for air crew emergency kits. Obviously, they were not made to be hung from a belt or web gear harness....and the speculation goes on. They are mint with some minute and near invisible age marks and they are beautiful examples of this rare type of knife. The wall hanger display is included in the auction as are the two hat pins Mountain Division and 1st Special Services Force. Email me at cerx2@msn.com for more pictures or call me at 972-576-8875.
