It is the first issue of the famous "Atomic" espresso coffee maker. This is the model that started it all - you can see an expert review on this first model by Googling "Coffee Crew Atomic 101". This model has a flat top and a plaque on the top that reads "Atomic Espresso Stella Wien Patent" - the word "Atomic" is shaped to resemble an atomic mushroom cloud. The knob has raised text that reads "Stella Espresso Wien Austria Patent" - the text is a little "fuzzy", probably due to steam exposure over the years (see close-up photo). This model is made of aluminum and apparently, as part of the manufacturing process, when the sand core was removed, the piece was welded to close-up the hole, a feat that is extremely difficult and that required great skill and precision. This particular example is in very good condition, considering its age and the fact that it was used. The black bakelite knob has some cracking to it (see last two close-up photos), but I believe is still functional and doesn't appear to be in danger of falling apart. The rubber seal that would hold the coffee basket tightly in place is brittle (see close-up photo) and, therefore, no longer functional - I think that this would be fairly easy to replace. The original aluminum cup is missing, but you can use any type of cup and it should be too difficult to find an appropriate vintage aluminum cup. Otherwise, there is minor "pitting" on the head (see close-up photo) and the piece would benefit from a cleaning, but is in very good condition and displays wonderfully. It measures 8 ΒΌ" in height and weighs 3 lbs and 5 oz. This is the "holy grail" of Atomic coffee makers - a wonderful example of mid-century modern design. Reserve is set at a reasonable level, given the rarity of this piece.
