Exceptionally rare and highly important Bezalel adorned plaque of the Balfour declaration, Jerusalem, Palestine, 1917. The "Balfour Declaration" became the basis for international support for the founding of the modern state of Israel. (See bellow) The etched, engraved and chased zinc and brass wood mounted plaque depicting Lord Balfour at the center with landscape views of Palestine on both sides above the Hebrew translation of the declaration and the Hebrew inscription: "Published by Y. Ben-Dov Bezalel Yerushalem", and "Eretz Israel". (See bellow) The top with the date November 2nd the year 1917. On four corners of the plaque views of Rachel's Tomb, Tower of David, The Western Wall and Jaffa. The plaque was designed by Shmuel Ben-David (Davidov). (See Bellow) The center part was originally made as a printing block and we found a postcard that was made out of this plaque and we are adding it to the item (see picture). A metal ring at the back for hanging on the wall. Measures 13in X 18.5in. Very good condition, needs some cleaning. A truly rare and important museum quality piece of Israel history, one of a kind! The Balfour DeclarationNovember 2, 1917 During the First World War, British policy became gradually committed to the idea of establishing a Jewish home in Palestine (Eretz Yisrael). After discussions in the British Cabinet, and consultation with Zionist leaders, the decision was made known in the form of a letter by Arthur James Lord Balfour to Lord Rothschild. The letter represents the first political recognition of Zionist aims by a Great Power. Foreign OfficeNovember 2nd, 1917 Dear Lord Rothschild, I have much pleasure in conveying to you, on behalf of His Majesty's Government, the following declaration of sympathy with Jewish Zionist aspirations which has been submitted to, and approved by, the Cabinet. "His Majesty's Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country." I should be grateful if you would bring this declaration to the knowledge of the Zionist Federation. Yours sincerely,Arthur James Balfour Yaacov Ben-Dov (1882-1868) - an artist photographer and a teacher of photography at the old Bezalel Academy.A pioneer who arrived at Israel on the second Aliyah wave, he was one of the founders of the film industry in the land.He is mostly known for his work of landscapes and portraits of prominent figures, among them Zionist leaders,community leaders, artists, intellectuals and people familiarized with the cultural scene of the time. Ben-Dov was born in the Ukraine and studied at the Academy of the Arts in Kiev.He was influenced by the Zionist idea and was inspired by Menachem Ussishkin to make aliyah.He settled in Jerusalem and continued his studies at the Bezalel Academy while at the same time working as an assistant photographer to Krikorian.When he graduated, he stayed at Bezalel for four more years (1910-1914), promoting the field of the early motion picturesand teaching still photography mostly as a prerequisite for illustration, engraving and print.Ben-Dov produced about 800 postcards in all and brought out six albums that reached the entire Jewish world under the name "Y. Ben-Dov. Bezalel Jerusalem" Ben David, Shmuel, Bulgary, 1884-1927Shmuel Ben David (Davidov), b. 1884, Sofia, Bulgaria. Immigrated 1906. Studies: 1903-05 Art Academy,Sofia, with Boris Schatz; in first group of Bezalel, Jerusalem; advanced studies, 1912-13 Paris.1907 Chairman of Students and Workers Committee of Bezalel.Organised and taught in Department of Carpet Design.Teaching: 1909-12 Bezalel; 1920-27 Hebrew Gymnasium, Jerusalem. Died 1927. The Bezalel School was founded in 1906 by Boris Schatz, who shaped its character. His approach stressed both the practical and the ideal. His vision was to develop useful arts and crafts among Palestinian Jews, thereby decreasing the dependence on charity.At the same time, he sought to inspire his students to create a Jewish national style of the arts, in order to promote the Zionist endeavor.
